HP Notebook PCs - Hard Drive and Memory (RAM) Verification

Description

This document describes the methods to verify the hard drive and RAM of the notebook PC.

Determine the size of the hard drive

Use one of the following methods to confirm the hard drive size.

Method 1: My Computer

This method provides details of the hard drive(s) of the notebook PC using My Computer.
  1. Click Start and then click My Computer.
  2. Select Local Disk (C:).
  3. View the Local Disk (C:) information under Details in the left column.

Method 2: Windows Explorer

This method provides details of the hard drive(s) of the notebook PC using Windows Explorer.
  1. Click Start, All Programs, Accessories and then Windows Explorer.
    Keyboard Option: Press the Windows Logo key + E.
  2. In the left column, click My Computer. Right click Local Disk (C:) in the right column and select Properties.
  3. The drive capacity is displayed above the pie chart.

Method 3: Computer Management

This method provides details of the hard drive(s) of the notebook PC using Disk Management in the Computer Management tool.
  1. Click Start and then Run.
  2. Type compmgmt.msc and click Ok.
  3. Under Storage, click Disk Management. The drive capacity is listed under capacity.

Method 4: Help and Support

This method provides details of the hard drive(s) of the notebook PC using Disk Management in the Computer Management tool.
  1. Click Start and then Help and Support.
  2. Under Pick A Help Topic, click Learn More About Your PC.
  3. Under My HP Computer, click System Information. The hard drive capacity is listed under Hard Drive.

Determine the amount of Random Access Memory (RAM)

Use one of the following methods to confirm the amount of installed RAM.

Method 1: System Information

  1. Click Start and then click Run.
  2. Type msinfo32 and click Ok.
  3. The amount of RAM is displayed in the right column under Total Physical Memory.

Method 2: System Properties

note:
The amount displayed may be less then the amount of physical RAM installed if the notebook uses shared video RAM.
  1. Right click the My Computer icon on the Windows Desktop.
  2. Select Properties.
    The amount of RAM is displayed next to the CPU speed.
    note:
    The amount of displayed RAM may not take into account shared video memory. The amount displayed may be less than the amount of physical RAM installed.
    note:
    If the My Computer icon is not displayed click Start, Run and type sysdm.cpl. Then click Ok.

Method 3: Help and Support

  1. Click Start and then Help and Support.
  2. Under Pick A Help Topic, click Learn More About Your PC.
  3. Under My HP Computer, click System Information. The amount of installed RAM is listed under Memory.

Method 4: Computer Setup

note:
This method may vary depending upon the BIOS installed on the notebook PC.
  1. Boot or restart the computer.
  2. Repeatedly press the F10 key to enter Computer Setup.
  3. On the File Menu, use the Up and Down arrow keys to select System Information and press the Enter key. The amount of installed RAM is listed under Memory Size.
