"Hacer la cimarra" decimos en Chile cuando se supone que uno debe ir a la escuela y no va para ir a "carretear" a la casa de alguien, esto sin el conocimiento de los padres. ¿Cuál sería el equivalete en inglés y/o otras partes del globo?

*Carretear: ir a fiesta o reunión con amigos generalmente para bailar o beber ron, vino, chelas** etc.

Chela: Cerveza (También se les dice Chela a la gente que se llama Graciela o Marcela)

    To reiterate what scotu wrote: Most definitely this is the spelling of HOOKY.
    And yes, in America one can:
    be truant (formal)
    play hooky
    ditch class/school
    bag school/class
    blow off school or class

    And these are just terms from a 50 year old. I will consult with my adolescent students to see if any new terms have emerged. I would be interesting to know where the word cimarra comes from.....Ideas anyone?
     
    It comes from the situation of one of our Patriot Icons.. Bernardo O'Higgins. When he played the hooky, he went to a place in the Santa Lucia Hill called Cimarra. I learned this watching a Cultural TV show that was broadcast in Chile.. I'm Chilean BTW
     
    Interesting debate about playing hookie. I have a couple of questions: the truant officer is someone from the school or he belongs to another organization? Does he use, for instance, a special car like police officers? What are his duties? Such officer does not exist here and for me is interesting. Thanks.

    To ditch school or classes me resulta más conocido en inglés que las otras traducciones. ¿No se dice también skip classes?
    Por cierto, en alemán se dice schwänzen :)

    The truant officer is usually a law enforcement official because it's the law that you have to go to school until a certain age. This person can issue citations.

    But if a school has a big problem with truancy, they may have a person ("attendance liason" or some other title) whose job it is to go to students' homes to try to persuade them to go back to school. This person doesn't issue citations (to my knowledge); he or she just wants the kid to go back to school.

    At least that's how it is here in LA...

    Para mi, skip class o skip school es lo más usado (por mi no, claro, pero por lo que he oido ;)). También to cut class (pero nunca to cut school).

    Se dice to play the hooky.

    Si lo de ir a una fiesta informal con amigos es obligatorio, hay que mencionarlo de esta manera:

    He skipped his afternoon classes and went to hang out at a friend's house (where they were drinking beer etc).
    He played hooky with some friends.
